December 9, 2024 – With help from the federal Zero-Emission Transit Fund (ZETF), several Ontario communities are studying how to transition their fuel-based public transit vehicles to zero-emission electric buses.

Planning activities include route mapping and scheduling, identifying the required charging infrastructure, developing step-by-step processes and timelines for electrifying fleets, and conducting climate adaptation and resilience assessments.

The findings from these studies will advise each community on the required elements for transitioning to a zero-emission fleet, including the steps for purchasing electric buses and charging infrastructure.

  • The Town of Collingwood’s feasibility study and fleet transition plan is receiving $69,552 in ZETF funding and $17,388 in municipal funding.
  • The Town of Halton Hills’ feasibility study and fleet transition plan is receiving $91,608 in ZETF funding and $22,902 in municipal funding.
  • The Town of Cobourg’s feasibility study and fleet transition plan is receiving $95,772 in ZETF funding and $23,943 in municipal funding.
  • The Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s feasibility study and fleet transition plan is receiving $100,372 in ZETF funding and $25,093 in municipal funding.
  • The City of Windsor’s feasibility study and fleet transition plan is receiving $116,031 in ZETF funding and $29,008 in municipal funding.
  • The City of Kingston’s feasibility study and fleet transition plan is receiving $119,938 in ZETF funding and $29,985 in municipal funding.
  • The Town of Milton’s battery electric bus feasibility study and fleet transition plan project is receiving $120,297 in ZETF funding and $30,075 in municipal funding.
  • The City of Thunder Bay’s feasibility study and fleet transition plan is receiving $128,400 in ZETF funding and $32,100 in municipal funding.

Through the Zero-Emission Transit Fund, the Government of Canada supports public transit and school bus operators as they plan for electrification, purchase zero-emission buses, and build associated infrastructure—including facility upgrades.
