Ottawa providing over $175 million to 12 Alberta clean energy projects

October 31, 2023 – Over $175 million in federal spending is making its way toward 12 Alberta-based clean energy projects, announced Natural Resources Canada.

“[The Canadian Renewable Energy Association] welcomes this federal investment in Indigenous-led clean energy projects, which will create jobs and opportunities for Albertans while also helping the province deliver on its decarbonization goals,” said Vittoria Bellissimo, president and CEO.

LANFINE WIND 1
Recipient: Pattern Energy
Location: Oyen, Alberta
Funding: $20,623,445

The Lanfine Wind 1 LP is a 150-MW onshore wind project. It will install 35 Vestas V150-4.3 MW turbines with a 105-metre hub height.

HILDA WIND POWER PROJECT

The Buffalo Atlee Wind 4 LP is a 10.4-MW wind farm near Jenner.

ADVANCED DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Recipient: ATCO
Location: Vegreville
Funding: $12,350,000

ATCO will deploy hardware and software systems in Vegreville to upgrade control and distribution systems, and improve its ability to manage electricity outages.

ASSET MODERNIZATION
Recipient: ATCO
Location: 27 communities across the province
Funding: $25,000,000

ATCO will deploy hardware and software systems across Alberta to upgrade its control and distribution systems, and improve its ability to manage electricity outages.

ADVANCED METERING INFRASTRUCTURE
Recipient: ATCO
Location: 190 communities
Funding: $25,000,000

ATCO will deploy 230,000 AMI units and supporting communications equipment across 190 communities (rural, remote, and urban), providing customers with time-of-use pricing.

BARLOW SOLAR PARK
Recipient: ATCO, and Chiniki and Goodstoney First Nations
Location: Calgary
Funding: $4,033,231

Owned in part by these two First Nations, Barlow Solar Park is a 27-MW solar farm.

DEERFOOT SOLAR PARK
Recipient: ATCO, and Chiniki and Goodstoney First Nations
Location: Calgary
Funding: $9,214,092

Owned in part by these two First Nations, Deerfoot Solar Park is a 37-MW solar farm located in Calgary.

MONTANA FIRST NATION MICROGRID PROJECT
Recipient: Akamihk Energy
Location: Montana First Nation
Funding: $1,000,000

Owned by Montana First Nation, Akamihk Energy will investigate the potential to integrate all electricity distribution infrastructure and service on the First Nation’s lands into a consolidated microgrid.

The projects are receiving funding through Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways (SREP)—a federal program that is providing about $4.5 billion for “smart renewable energy and electrical grid modernization projects”.
