September 24, 2013 | By Anthony Capkun

September 24, 2013 – Toshiba Corp. announced it is entering the wind power generation business by acquiring Sigma Power Janex Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Janex Co. Ltd. On completion of the acquisition, scheduled this November, Sigma will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Toshiba.

Toshiba says it is reinforcing its capabilities and presence in renewable energy sources. The company boasts it is number one in the world with regard to geothermal power generation systems, “a leader in hydro power systems” and is involved in the wind power generation equipment business through a 2011 capital alliance with Korea-based Unison Co. Ltd.

By acquiring Sigma, Toshiba expects to expand its wind power business by “promoting synergies between the engineers who develop the equipment and those who deploy and use it”.
