IES publishes lighting design guides for roadways and toll plazas
July 15, 2014 | By Anthony Capkun
July 15, 2014 – The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES)—which claims to be the oldest and largest educational and scientific society in North America devoted to lighting—has published two new Design Guides for roadway lighting:
• Roadway Lighting Maintenance (DG-4-14)
• Lighting for Toll Plazas (DG-23-14)
DG-4-14 is designed to help designers and owners understand how proper maintenance can contribute to a reliable and high-performing roadway lighting system. “The primary purpose of roadway lighting is to provide a safe nighttime environment for vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and proper maintenance is a key component to perpetuating the effectiveness of the roadway’s lighting system,” said Rita Harrold, IES director of technology.
“DG-23-14 focuses on a more narrow aspect of roadway lighting, which is toll plazas,” continued Harrold. “This document is written to provide the lighting designer with the illuminance characteristics to properly light toll plazas.”
Both DG-4-14 and DG-23-14 are available both in print and as PDF downloads.
