OPG launches electrification and charging infrastructure subsidiary

October 25, 2021 | By Anthony Capkun

October 25, 2021 – Ontario Power Generation has launched a subsidiary to provide electrification and charging infrastructure “that enables municipal transit agencies, and other corporate fleets, to power their vehicles using clean electricity”.

Caroline Mulroney, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, said “it is important that municipalities have the opportunity to power their transit with clean electricity”.

Poweron Energy Solutions will support large-scale electrification projects by providing turnkey solutions encompassing all electrical infrastructure—from grid connection to vehicle chargers—including:

• Infrastructure delivery and project management
• Operations and maintenance
• Onsite generation, battery storage and back-up power
• Smart charging and energy management

“Poweron is leveraging Ontario’s clean electricity to help decarbonize other sectors,” said Theresa Dekker. “We know electrification of transportation is a high impact strategy to help meet climate change goals, and we have the infrastructure and large project expertise necessary to enable municipal and other fleets to make the transition.”

OPG says the new subsidiary minimizes the risk of electrification for fleets by taking on the construction and operation of charging infrastructure, allowing fleets to focus on their core operations.

Poweron is currently working with the Toronto Transit Commission and Toronto Hydro to electrify the TTC’s bus fleet, with Poweron slated to design, build, own, operate, and maintain the charging infrastructure.
