Altona Towns: Canada’s first pre-planned residential smart microgrid community

January 7, 2022 | By Anthony Capkun

January 7, 2022 – In November 2021, Electrical Business Magazine joined representatives from Opus One Solutions*, Elexicon Energy, Marshall Homes and Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Altona Towns in Pickering, Ont.

Funded through the Ontario Ministry of Energy’s Smart Grid Fund and IESO’s Grid Innovation Fund, the 27-unit community celebrated the completion of one of Canada’s first pre-planned nested microgrid residential communities.

The community encompasses rooftop solar, lithium-ion battery energy storage, electric vehicle charging stations, smart metering, and an integrated distribution energy service platform to control and coordinate the components of the microgrid.

The microgrid’s design includes a 25-kW rooftop solar array on one of the housing blocks, which will provide an estimated 10% of the total power needed to run the community.

Construction started in July 2020, right after the initial Covid stop order was lifted. Residents began moving into their new homes in April 2021.
