Learn about The Soo a.k.a. the “Alternative Energy Capital of North America”

June 24, 2021 | By Anthony Capkun

June 24, 2021 – Sault Ste. Marie’s city council has declared the community the “Alternative Energy Capital of North America”, and with good reason. But the city is also set to host an “advanced, community-wide smart grid project that will be a first in Canada”.

To some extent, Electrical Business Magazine has been covering smart grid-related matters ever since Ontario announced its smart meter campaign some 13 years ago. So what’s “The Soo” doing differently that makes its Sault Smart Grid (SSG) project so unique?

To learn more about what’s going on, we turn to Rob Brewer, the president & CEO of PUC Services Inc., which serves the Sault Ste. Marie area. We discuss The Soo’s bona fide claim to being a major hub of renewable and clean energies, but then delve into the nuts and bolts of the SSG project: advanced metering infrastructure, voltage/VAR optimization, and distribution automation.

But, for all of this to occur successfully, Rob stresses the need for electric utilities—and its partners—to be creative, to receive the support of council, and to engage regularly and meaningfully with a myriad of community stakeholders. Have a listen.
