SaskTel & Alcatel-Lucent transform a goat path into a superhighway

September 13, 2013 | By Anthony Capkun

September 13, 2013 – Alcatel-Lucent and SaskTel say they have successfully tested fiber optic data transmission that could enable the delivery of data at speeds of up to 400G (gigabytes per second) over a network originally built for 10G traffic.

“This trial demonstrates the commitment SaskTel has to being a leader in broadband, and providing the best and fastest communications network to our numerous stakeholders, including consumers, government and our region’s diverse private industries,” said Ron Styles, CEO of SaskTel.

The trial took place on a live network between Regina and Saskatoon, over 250-km away, and was based on Alcatel’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch platform (photo), which is able to be deployed with existing multiple 10G, 40G and 100G network links.
