Volta launching Canada’s first copper foil factory for electric vehicle batteries

September 6, 2023 | By Anthony Capkun

September 6, 2023 – Volta Energy Solutions—a subsidiary of South Korea-based Solus Advanced Materials)—is launching Canada’s first battery copper foil factory for electric vehicles in Granby, Que.

“Copper foil plays an essential role as a current collector in the construction of lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in EVs,” explained Dejae Chin, chair of Solus and Volta.

Chin added that Quebec is the ideal location for Volta’s first North American factory because of its strategic geographical location and “strong political commitment to making electric vehicle battery production a key sector of its economy”.

With the aim of becoming the world’s largest producer of copper foil, the company has established itself in Quebec as Volta Energy Solutions Canada.

Volta expects to go into mass production in 2026 and will sell its product to customers in North America. The initial launch will produce 25,000 tons of copper foil per year, which will increase to 63,000 tons per year during Phase 2.

“Right now, we are building an important segment of the battery sector in Quebec, which will bring more investment our way over the years,” said Premier François Legault. “More projects of the sort are also coming up, solidifying our position as a green economy leader in North America.”
