Hydro One builds power grid for International Plowing Match

September 9, 2019 | By Peter Saunders

September 9, 2019 – Powerline technicians and apprentices with Hydro One have been building an electrical grid to power next week’s 2019 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) in Verner, a community within West Nipissing, Ont.

Hydro One has supported IPM for more than 16 years by building the grid that powers the event and its recreational vehicle (RV) park, which draw more than 80,000 visitors annually. Over four weeks, crews develop temporary infrastructure to supply enough electricity to power the equivalent of a small town.

This year’s IPM will run from Sept. 17 to 21. Crews are finalizing the installation of approximately 325 poles, 80 transformers and 19 km of wire.

“IPM allows us to support our farming customers’ largest annual event and celebrate the economic benefits they provide to the province, while also offering a valuable training opportunity for our apprentices,” explains Jason Fitzsimmons, chief corporate affairs and customer care officer for Hydro One.

The electricity transmission and distribution provider will also set up interactive displays at an event booth, where visitors can try on safety equipment, learn to identify common household hazards and participate in hands-on activities. Crews will also provide live on-site demonstrations of the tasks they handle in the field.
